According to a latest report by WHO, around 22 per cent prevalence rate of obesity was reported in children and adolescents aged between 5-19 years over the last 5 years in India. Globally, the trend is high among children under five years of age with at least 41 million found to be obese or overweight in 2014. Although the figures paint a stark picture, most parents and public health authorities are blissfully unaware. The reason is because the causes that lead to child obesity are not well-defined. According to experts, poor eating habits and lack of exercise are major causes of rising obesity among the kids nowadays. The sedentary lifestyle is the main culprit, which not only makes the kids gain weight at a quick pace but also puts them at a higher risk of diabetes, hypertension and heart diseases.

Children in today’s world are forced to restrict themselves within the four walls of an apartment, blame it on to parent’s busy life schedule, increasing academic pressure on children, lack of space for kids’ play area. This makes them a lot more sedentary than the kids of earlier days. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the childhood obesity rate has more than doubled for both preschool children (ages 2-5) and adolescents (ages 12-19). For children between the ages of six and eleven, the rate has tripled. Obese adolescents are also more likely to develop prediabetes, a condition in which blood glucose levels indicate a high risk for development of diabetes, as well as bone and joint problems.

While encouraging physical activity is the first step to combatting childhood obesity, educating our children about fitness is the step that will carry them into healthy adulthood. When we teach our kids about health and wellness at a young age, and build a positive association around being active, they are much more likely to develop healthy habits that continue throughout their lives.

Children learn the importance of team-building and collaboration through physical group activities.

While many physical education programs face the risk of being cut from academic curriculum in favor of increasing class time, the reality is that active children tend to perform better in subjects like reading and mathematics. Physical education plays a substantial role in shaping children. health and development, teaching them valuable life skills in fitness, focus, nutrition, and social interactions.
